The problem
Counselors, coaches, and therapists often run a practice across notebooks, chats, calendars, and spreadsheets. Sagenel needed a dedicated companion for one-on-one session work — something calm enough for mental-health and coaching contexts, practical enough for daily client follow-up, and simple enough that practitioners would actually use it. The product had to feel trustworthy with sensitive client information, not like a generic CRM with counseling labels bolted on.
What I built
I designed and built The Counselor's Companion entirely in Flutter for Sagenel — product UI, information architecture, and cross-platform delivery. The app centers a teal-led practice dashboard (clients, active cases, locations, quick actions), a searchable client CRM with status and payment filters, and a sessions workspace with scheduling, outcome badges, therapy-type metadata, and calendar/analytics tabs.
Shipped features include session reminders, client/session documentation, PDF and Excel export, in-session games and activities, push notification inbox behavior, and store distribution on both iOS and Android. Security and privacy were treated as first-class: encrypted-in-transit data handling and HIPAA-conscious product decisions, aligned with how the app presents itself on the App Store and Google Play.
Signals
- iOS + Android
- Live on App Store & Google Play
- Solo build
- UI/UX design and Flutter development
Approach
- Map real counselor workflows into a clear four-tab spine: Home, Clients, Sessions, and Profile.
- Design a calm teal/navy system with readable status language (paid, pending, completed, outcomes) instead of noisy dashboard chrome.
- Build the Flutter app end-to-end — screens, navigation, forms, filters, reminders, and export paths.
- Ship and iterate on both stores (App Store + Google Play), including client-profile upgrades like goals, GP notes, and smarter filters in later releases.
Scope notes
- Brand ownership and publishing entity sit with Sagenel / Nkechi Emmanuel-Layode; my role was design + Flutter engineering.
- Clinical judgment, session content, and practice outcomes remain with the professionals using the app.
- This case study covers the product design and mobile build — not backend infrastructure owned outside the Flutter client.
